Wellington House, St.Helier

COMPLETED 2020 // RESIDENTIAL REFURBISHMENT DEVELOPMENT

A dull 1980s office building on a landmark town site has been transformed into thirteen well-planned apartments, showing how repurposed buildings can be both sustainable and desirable. Wellington House retains much of its original fabric while meeting, and in places exceeding, the energy performance expected of a new building. The external walls were upgraded and the original stair core kept, while the adjacent lightwell was significantly enlarged to bring daylight and fresh air deep into the plan. Each apartment benefits from careful space planning despite the constraints of the existing structure and the complex retrofitted services, resulting in light, comfortable homes shaped by the principle of designing places you would want to live in. Crisp detailing and playful touches lift the streetscape, including bespoke gold-coloured balustrades made using waterjet technology and inspired by elements of Apsley House, the Duke of Wellington’s London residence.
