COMPLETED 2019 // RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT

The Chapel is a Grade 1 listed landmark on La Grande Route de St Jean that had permission for conversion into a single family home as part of a wider redevelopment. Godel Architects developed an alternative design that followed the approved principles while taking a more practical approach, balancing Historic Building Law requirements with modern living needs and improved thermal performance. The design inserts pod rooms within the dramatic vaulted space, centred on views of the restored organ pipes, with four bedrooms and a multi-level open-plan living area arranged as platforms to maintain visual links and enjoy views across surrounding fields. A basement cinema, utility spaces, and garden access were added, while key historic features, including openings, stairs, balcony seating, and the original ceiling, were carefully retained and restored, resulting in a bold yet sensitive contemporary home.
