North Coast House, St. John

COMPLETED 2019 // NEW BUILD

The site sits high on the escarpment above Wolf’s Caves within the Coastal National Park, with far-reaching views toward the other Channel Islands and the French coast. Strict planning policies made development challenging, and Godel Architects were commissioned to demolish the existing buildings and design a substantial new house with a guest cottage. After earlier advice that only “exceptional” architecture could be supported, the practice developed a design that considered both the building and the landscape, securing planning approval in 2015. The completed house is a formal 19th-century-inspired residence of high craftsmanship, with interiors that match the exterior in scale and detail through a blend of intersecting styles and carefully planned spaces. It is shaped to capture light and frame the dramatic views, offering generous entertaining areas alongside intimate bedrooms and suites, all enriched with bespoke features.
