La Maison du Portier, St.Ouen

COMPLETED 2022 // JERSEY DESIGN AWARDS 2022 - HIGHLY COMMENDED - BEST SMALL-SCALE EXTENSION

La Maison du Portinfer in St. Ouen is a ‘Highly Commended’ project from the 2022 Jersey Design Awards, set within a Grade 3 listed farmstead of early 18th-century origin. The extension forms the latest chapter in the site’s long history, adding to a converted barn while staying discreet and subservient to the farm’s U-shaped layout. The design keeps key historic features visible by retaining original openings and exposing the granite rubble walls inside the new room. Externally, the mix of red brick pillars, oak-framed windows, doors and timber infill draws on the character of a traditional cart shed, aligning with the scale and proportions of the original buildings. Despite its modern use and glazing, the space feels rooted in the historic farm grouping, reflecting careful coordination to meet client needs and regulatory requirements while respecting the setting and nearby rural vistas.
