Gouray Lodge, St.Martin
COMPLETED 2020 // NEW BUILD
Set within the footprint of an old greenhouse, this replacement scheme transforms a split-level site into a gardener’s workspace on one side and a modern recreation pavilion on the other, giving the building two distinct faces. The structure sits within the hillside to limit its impact on the landscape and to create a sense of surprise as visitors pass the modest, low greenhouse and enter through a small, understated doorway before the space opens into a bright, expansive pavilion with wide views over the surrounding landscape and tennis court. The contrast is deliberate: the greenhouse side is compact, with dark glazing frames, granite walls, a simple monopitch roof and low eaves, while the pavilion is modernist and bold, raised above the tennis court and reached by broad steps framed with planting that softens the approach.
