Furze Cottage, St.Brelade
COMPLETED 2013 // DESIGN AWARD 2013 - WINNER - BEST LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT PROJECT
IN COLLABORATION WITH ANTHONY PAUL
This listed cottage, designated a Site of Special Interest during the application process and originally built as the summer house of a former Bailiff of Jersey, was extended with great care by opening up the previously inaccessible attic and adding a new earth-covered structure to the south, cut into the hillside. A structurally glazed link connects this contemporary intervention to the historic cottage, allowing natural light to reach the rear of the house through its glass roof. The project also introduced discreet vehicular access and an underground car park, the roof of which has been landscaped as an Arts and Crafts style garden that hides the parking from the original pedestrian approach. The design maximises living space while minimising visual impact, blending thoughtful contemporary detailing with traditional local materials to create a sensitive and characterful response to the site.
